For the first time in the history of the Mutt Strut parade, a very special shelter dog was the 2017 Grand Marshall. 5 yr old “Layla” lead off the festivities, and this a role that this patient pup has earned! Layla has recently come up on her 1 year anniversary at The Humane Society of Kent County – on May 28 th to be exact. For more than 365 days now, ever enthusiastic Layla went through her days looking forward to walks with staff members, playtime with Washington College friends, and a fair amount of meet and greets with potential adopters. Layla hasn’t met a person yet that she didn’t love! For one reason or another, Layla never was chosen.
One day, Layla decided that she couldn’t hack kennel life any longer. She wasn’t wiggly and smiling, she stopped eating her meals and even turned down scrumptious treats. The staff could not bare to see her so sad. Animal Control Officer Maddy Eckel vowed to take her home and foster her until her forever home presented itself. She has learned so much about Layla in a very short time. Layla doesn’t mind being crated for work hours, she is gentle with cats, and has even befriended Maddy’s male dog, Ali!
Layla is a true sweetheart, and is close to the entire HSKC Shelter Staff. Maybe, just maybe, she’ll find the family she has always longed for.
