“I see you! I see you looking at me! But I am not coming out of my basket. I know that my official name is Mya Serene. I’ve no idea why I was named for a British bed – but it’s a pretty name, so I’ll take it. But I am not coming out of my basket!”
“I am a fine tabby woman. I know my own mind. I know what I like – and what I don’t like. Yes, you may pet my head and my ears. I like people who pet my head and ears. But – I’m still not coming out of my basket. See – it’s My Basket. I wove it myself. I am a Basket Weaver, a Basket Woman. I’m just not quite complete without My Basket. I’m kind and gentle and middle-aged. Old enough to know better than to do kitten mischief; young enough to know love when I feel it and to play with my person. I had a person – seems to me she had to move some place where I was not allowed. Why would any place not allow a fine cat? Especially one with her own Basket!”
“I’m friendly and gentle and definitely tabby. Have you ever seen the automatons on Antiques Roadshow? A doll carrying a basket – when she’s wound up, a cat pops out of the basket and meows? Sometimes, it’s just a decorated can – but the cat comes out and meows? Well, well – that’s where I got this basket idea. Mya Serene was just charmed and made herself a basket. Every now and them, I pop up and say ‘Hi!’ – and then go back down.”
“About 100 years ago, Mary Austin wrote a book of stories for children called The Basket Woman. Basket Woman was wise and talented and patient. Mya Serene is wise and talented and patient, too – and a fine tabby woman. What she seeks is a person who won’t move away and leave her, a person who loves her cat who loves her basket. With $120, you might be able to persuade me to pop out of my basket. Please ask!”
